Casting Directors Workshops

The next event in our series of Casting Director Workshops will be with Janis Jaffa CDG at The Actors Centre (Rehearsal Room) from 6pm to 9pm on Tuesday 25 April.

Casting for over twenty years, Janis has worked on a wide range of projects including feature films, TV drama, fringe theatre and short films. From comedy (Meet the Magoons for Wark Clements) to series drama (four years on The Bill for Talkback Thames), short films (The Road Home - short listed for an Oscar nomination, The Backseat – currently a festival darling) to fringe theatre (The Finborough, Kings Head) and feature films (most recently Before the First Snow – currently in development).

Janis has just completed casting on the short film Toothfairy, which is just about to start the festival rounds, and a major campaign for X Box. She is shortly embarking on a research and development theatre project, funded by the Arts Council.

The cost for this event will be £10 which covers the cost of the room. The CD fees will be covered by AAUK. Casting Wokshops at the Actors Guild are £32 and you need to be a member.

Janis would like you to come with a short monologue or scene (no more than 2 minutes) that you are comfortable with and best reflects your castability. Please make sure you bring an extra copy for Janis to refer to during the workshop. If you are doing a scene you will also need to bring a copy for someone to read in for you

Casting Directors Workshops

The first event in our Casting Directors Workshop series will be with Shakyra Dowling at Spotlight from 6pm to 9pm on the 20th of October.

As a UK London based Casting Director, Shakyra’s flawless work ethic and intuitive nature casts a spell on any project entrusted to her, as she is tireless in her search for finding the perfect talent for every role.

Shakyra has worked as a Casting Director on a wide range of visual media across a broad spectrum, specialising in casting British independent feature films, European co-productions, television and commercials. Having been on both sides of the casting couch, Shakyra instinctively understands what is desired from both the actors, allowing her to deliver excellent quality work.

Shakyra’s approachable personality, endless patience and experienced feedback has been praised by both the producers and directors with whom she has worked.

Shakyra is a founder board member of the Casting Directors Association, a voting member of the European Film Academy and a member of the Casting Society of America.

Happy New Year everyone!

This New Year holds lots of exciting things for our organisation. I hope to see lots of new relationships with Casting Directors formed and many jobs earned because of your connection to American Actors UK. However, I want to focus on an issue that is of immediate importance to probably the majority of our members. This new outrageous law that is looking to require us to earn £35K or more per year or be kicked to the curb needs to be stopped. Laurence goes into more detail on this topic in the From The Green Room segment of the January 2016 newsletter. Personally, I urge you to share and promote the link that leads to a petition to scrap the £35K threshold.

Let's band together and use our power to help ensure foolish laws like this don't take hold.

If you haven't already, please sign this petition and share it around:

Currently Casting! The final 9 plays have been selected for the upcoming New American Voices festival, and we have several great casting opportunities for our members. Check out the festival home page here for more details of the plays. We are holding some group casting sessions this week according to age group, and you should all have received an email with the day and times of the castings as well as the director's contact details. To make sure you are considered for all the roles you want to be seen for, please send your photo and CV to the directors of the shows you are interested in, stating which roles you are interested in. The directors have been informed that they must see all the actors who wish to be considered for a role. Good luck and hopefully see you this week!

June's Mixer We had a great turnout at yesterday's social event at Lowlander in Covent Garden! It was a great opportunity to catch up with old friends and make some new ones, and with craft beers on tap and finger foods provided by the organisation, it was a wonderful way to spend a Tuesday evening. If you are new to American Actors UK these are a fabulous way to meet people and start networking. If you have ideas of what we should do for the next one, please feel free to email Nancy or Amy of our Membership Engagement Committee on
